Stucco Maintenance

Stucco is a hard, durable cladding option that can last decades with minimal maintenance.

Maintenance tips:

• Ensure gutters and downspouts are clean and free-flowing. This is especially important with downspouts that go into underground drainage, which is prone to clogs. Look for areas where mulch is easily washed out, or for staining on the stucco below a gutter.
• Adjust all sprinkler heads so water is not directed onto an exterior wall. This will reduce staining, especially from well water, and reduce the risk of damage from prolonged moisture exposure.
• Prune shrubs and trees away from walls to ensure adequate air flow. Remember: Right Plant, Right Place! to minimize damage to the walls, roof, foundation, and drainage from a shrub or tree that is too big for an area.
• Do not let mulch build up around the foundation. In extreme cases, flower beds that are raised around the perimeter of a structure and mulch that builds up over the foundation line can result in rot to the sill plate and framing of a home. Landscaping and grade should be designed and maintained to direct and keep water away from exterior walls.
• Keep it clean. Having your stucco periodically cleaned will minimize stains and make it easier to identify areas needing repair.
